BUSINESS TEAM BUILDING -8

Top Team Building Activities From TV - By: Dominic Donaldson

A harmonious working environment is essential for an efficient workplace, and the quality of the relationships between co-workers is the foundation for this harmony. Friction and tension in the workplace can reduce productivity and lead to hierarchal disharmony, upsetting the gentle ecosystem of working life. To maintain this delicate balance, companies turn to corporate events management for team building activities designed to encourage cohesion between colleagues and promote a deeper understanding and respect for fellow workers.

There are numerous team building activities available, all of which can be tailored to meet specific requirements. When choosing which activity to go for though, the nature of the business and the reasons for booking a team building course need to be considered. Some activities are designed to encourage creativity so would be suited to a company that employs creative people; others are task based to encourage communication and abstract thinking; and some are just for fun, because sometimes co-workers need to spend a little leisure time together to balance out the working persona. Some of the most popular team building activities available are based on familiar cultural themes, either from the television, or from childhood games.

The Apprentice is a popular television series hosted by Alan Sugar which pits eager business people against each other in a race to become one of Sir Alan's members of staff in real life. The format of the show has become a popular template for team bonding and is aimed at people that work in a fast-paced business environment. Challenges are set that require teams of people to overcome the tasks and can involve anything from creating a television commercial to a new line of company clothing.

The Generation Game is another TV family favourite that translates well as a team building event. Particularly suited to conferences as an icebreaker, and as a way for getting people from different departments to get to know one another, the active challenges are designed to bring fun as well as aid communication. Because the format is well known, competitors get stuck in immediately, making it one of the best options for companies whose workers rarely get a chance to interact in day to day working life.

Project Catwalk is a show that has hit high ratings in Britain quite recently with it's challenge of finding the next big designer. Team members have to design an outfit according to a brief, locate and purchase the materials and then tailor the clothing within a limited amount of time. The team building version is not as full of tears and tantrums as the television show, instead it incorporates all the fun elements of design, mixes it up with a bit of teamwork and has a show stopping catwalk finale. This package suits a dynamic and energetic company that wants to help its members expand their creative talents and share creative ideas.

Have I Got News for You has been a Friday night staple for British television audiences for well over ten years with it's satirical witty banter and mix of personalities. A team building version of this game can be tailored to a company, quizzing the contestants on all aspects of the company from protocol to office gossip!

These events and activities all combine to provide a day of entertainment and fun, with the more serious side effect of a happy and productive workforce. Ultimately, investing a day in boosting morale and camaraderie is an investment in the business you want to work.
